About Plastic

Plastic packaging is frequently used in products because it is strong, lightweight and often cheaper than alternatives. To throw such a valuable product out to be dumped or incinerated is obviously a very unsound strategy in environmental terms, and will either add non-degrading bulk to ugly landfill sites, or pollutants to the atmosphere.

The benefits of recycling plastic are the reduction of waste, the conservation of non-renewable energy and fuels (it takes considerably less energy to recycle plastic than to create virgin plastic from scratch), and the reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions into the atmosphere. It is apparent from these benefits how valuable a contribution you are making to protecting our planet by recycling plastic.

All plastic can be recycled, but different types of plastic differ in quality, quantity and the cost involved in recycling. There are many different types of plastic product, such as water bottles, cling film, plastic in cars, kitchenware, etc., and they all have different properties which require to be treated in different ways for recycling. Sophisticated machinery now exists for segregating the different types of plastic. These machines can automatically sort using a combination of spectroscopic identification methods and optical sensors to identify different polymers.

The plastic is reprocessed into pellets and flakes, which can then be reused to produce new products once they have been purified to ensure hygienic reuse. The pictures below show the pellets made from various plastic products:

Chocolate Box Trays
  • Milk chocolate box trays - PVC (polyvinyl)
Fruit Baskets
  • Fruit baskets - Polyethylene mix
Pallets
  • Pallets - High Density Polyethlene - (HDPE)
Milk Containers
  • Milk containers - HDPE
