Our Recycling Facility

Once collected, skips and ro-ro's are taken to our recycling facility in Bathgate. These mainly come from building sites and will typically contain concrete, timber, bricks and cardboard, as well as general waste.

Once at our recycling facility, the waste is segregated using our specialised equipment.

First, the larger materials are taken out - such as concrete, timber and cardboard.

Next, a conveyer belt takes the remaining waste through a sorting cabin, where a final sort is done to remove any remaining small amounts of recyclable waste.

The timber that is removed is shredded and is used for chipboard. Any cardboard that is recovered is baled and sent to mills for recycling.

Recovered aggregate (this includes bricks and concrete) is first processed in the crusher, which breaks the large lumps up into reusable sized pieces. This crushed material is then put through a screener which removes the 'fines'.

The 'fines' are basically anything which is under about half an inch in size. This is removed because companies who use the aggregate tend to request chunks of a certain size, and do not want smaller particles included in their load. The fines can be anything, such as soil or bits of aggregate that are too small for reuse, and are sent to the landfill for disposal.

The larger chunks of aggregate are used mostly for roadmaking, and for making hardened areas and yards.
