About Cardboard Recycling

Retail and restaurant businesses are the biggest producers of cardboard waste, and will have the biggest impact when they recycle.

A better ecological saving is made by recycling corrugated plastic than flat plastic, such as cereal packets. Out of the packaging used for cardboard, the UK only manages to recycle about 50%, so your contribution is important.

Cardboard boxes are strong, light, cheap and easy to make, and are the most common way of transporting goods. Almost every product you can think of is packaged using cardboard boxes.

Corrugated cardboard is made up of several layers with a wavy middle layer, which adds strength. Corrugated cardboard boxes make up 20-25% of the weight of waste that is sent to landfill. Corrugated cardboard is actually made from kraft paper, which is made from cellulose fibres. The brown colour is caused by the pulping process used to extract cellulose from wood chips.

The picture to the left shows bales of corrugated cardboard awaiting processing.

Quality is important for cardboard recycling. It is important to obtain cardboard that is free from contaminants such as plastic, wax or even other forms of paper such as newspapers and books.
